Catonic (M) Sdn. Bhd won this contract through an open bidding process by the Public Works Department in February of 2012. The contract calls for the design, supply, fabrication and replacement of the existing roof membrane, including its supporting structures (if necessary) which was first constructed for the Commonwealth Games in 1997. The original roof composite membrane had suffered irreversible premature ageing and damages and its canopy required total replacement.
The stadium roof canopy comprises 36 panels with a total fabric surface area of almost 44,000 sq. metres. The project was very fast track in nature and the contractor was given only 12 months to complete from the contract being awarded. To compound its complication, the live and operational offices are located within the stadium building and major events are still being held.
Highlights of the project:
- Biggest single tensile membrane roof replacement project in the world.
- The first tensile membrane project to adopt recycling of the old membrane using the Texyloop system.
